The Third Leg of our Aussie Trip - April 2014

First Leg - 2012 Queensland     (Earlier Posts on this Blog)

Second Leg - 2013 Queensland to Exmouth (Posts on Facebook)

Third Leg - 2014 Perth to ..........

April 3 to May 7, 2014

After 4 months back at Straddie (Roy doing hail and me some holiday cleaning), we flew back to Perth to our van which was stored at the Forestfield Van Park.  Roy's cousin Jan and her husband Ray stored our vehicle at their home for the 4 months we were gone.  Then we were off again on our adventure......

We spent one week in Perth and another at Mandurah to the south, at the Hideaway Estuary Van Park where we met up with Tony Webster who we'd run into for the third time on our travels in the west.

Then we headed up to Cervantes for a few days, Jurien Bay and Dongara, both for 2 days.  It was pretty crowed over this period because of the Easter School holidays and Anzac Day breaks.  After leaving Dongara, the crowds have dropped off thank god.

A couple of days at Kalbarri, with so much to see - we ended up extending another day.  Then to Denham in Shark Bay for a week.

The weather has been against us most of the time.  We have been lucky though that it hasn't been too cold for long.  We've had some nice warm sunny days also.  At present though, its overcast, drizzly and cool.

Blog 15 – Nindigully to Millmerran (Thursday 4 to Monday 8 October, 2012)

Millmerran Camp Oven Festival – Great Mate!!!!!  If you haven’t been to one before – mark this down on your To Do lists.  It’s only on every second year though.

Too close to home

Thursday 4 October, 2012 - Nindigully

We are so grateful to our new friends for all their help – both Sam and Kevern stopped in before heading off in their respective directions, to lend Roy a hand packing the heavy stuff.  Thanks so much guys.

When we were all packed up, we headed off from Bollon for Nindigully after all  !!!

We got a great site right on the Moonie River – pity Roy’s arm was stuffed or we would have got the kayaks off again.  Nevermind, we got to see the pub painted pink (and it doesn’t look too bad).

For tea we ordered Rack Of Lamb, and it was the best that I have ever had.  It was done with olive jus and potato bake.  Yum Yum Yum. (I’ll put this recipe in my collection for Roy to cook for me – hee hee hee).  It was very expensive, $36 – but so big that we shared (we’re pensioners now and that’s what pensioners do!).  We also had a cobb for an entrĂ©e’ in case we needed filling up. Absolutely scrumptious…..  Roy wasn’t fussed on the olive jus, but that was a minor issue.

Morning on the Moonie

Friday to Monday (5-8 October, 2012) – Millmerran Camp Oven Festival

Stopped at Gundy for a big shop – fuel – grog – gas.  Bloody hell !! There goes our allowance for the month….

Off again to Millmerran, arriving at about 3:30 – MY GAWD!!,  you should see the sea of caravans.  The only other time I’ve seen so many was at the Birdsville Races 2 years ago.

A sea of caravans - we're in there somewhere!!

Here we are - jammed in there
After settling in, we headed off for the entertainment.  Roy had just been up to the bar and came back with Lester in tow…  Would you believe it – how could you find anyone in that crowd.  Lester brought Kaye over and we had a catch up – then early to bed.  We were both quite buggered from a big day of driving and shopping.

Todd and Roy
Next day we spent looking at exhibits and Roy once again, ran into Todd and Irene.  Then later on we ran into Steve and Di.  We spent some time with them before we all headed off in our respective directions….

The entertainment and demonstrations were excellent. I love these country festivals.

Sheep Dog display
Rounded Up!!!!
The young dog was learning and needed the old dog to get the ducks in... BEAUTIFUL..
We watched the sheepdogs herding ducks, a pack horse display, engine pulling (to see which tractor could pull the most weight – good fun), campoven cooking displays – Roy took a lot of notes John!!  Then there were the market stalls.

This is the Engine Pulling competition - good fun watching these strong buggers pulling a load!!!.

The dog is mans best friend....

Just tonight we've met the neighbours behind us, after being here for 3 days.  We haven't been home and nor have they - but the crowd has thinned out now and we (Roy) has met them.  You're kidding - they're from Amity too...... Bloody hell, this world keeps getting smaller.  They are the Walkers and live in Millers Lane on the waterfront.  They have been on the road for nine years and rent the house out.  My God!!  Their daughter and her husband have just won the camp oven cooking competition here for the third time..... (They got pointers from me - ha ha).  They'll be on the island at xmas and will catch up with us.... Bloody Hell!!!!

Pixie
The entertainment consisted of Pixie Jenkins as the main attraction (we love Pixie) and an up and coming young man named Ryan Sampson, who has won a number of awards at the Tamworth Festival.  All “country” music, which I usually don’t like, but a cross-section of styles.  Really good.  I even bought his CD!! (Country) And another young guy called Tim Pearce and a young local band (school kids), CC and the Crusade, and Laura Downing, wow what a voice! (even though she is the World Champion Female Yodeller, she was awesome)  – all so talented!!!  And heaps more….. So much talent out there…  We had a wonderful time, that is, until we wandered home on Sunday arvo and found that the gas light on the fridge was blinking, indicating that there is a problem with the gas getting through… Oh No!!!  Roy had a look, but couldn’t see anything that he could fix himself…  I guess we’ll have to call into town tomorrow before heading on, to see if we can get it fixed.  Not too big a drama I hope.

We’re heading off tomorrow – but will call in to Millmerran to see about the gas problem.

Once again, not sure of our destination, but maybe Cecil Plains or Heifer Ck – who knows – but I do know that we’re getting too close to home.

As you all know, I’m obsessed with my camera – but now I have an added compulsion thanks to Kevern, who gave me some valuable lessons while we were camped at Bollon.  I now have to practice practice practice all he taught me.  Thanks Kevern – I will pursue it….  Hope the lessons show in my pics..

Anyway by now, you know the drill……………

Roadside burnoff..

Blog 14 – Bollon (Sept 26– Oct 4, 2012)

Well – plans certainly are meant to be broken – and as its turned out, one week later, we’re still here.  The consolation is that if you have to be held up somewhere – this would have to be the pick of the spots.  It really is beautiful here and has everything you could want right here – so we are quite happy to stay….

Getting closer to home - Oh No!!!

Monday 26 September – Thursday 4 October, 2012

Bollon Pub
We had planned to head off for Nindigully on Tuesday, but we had an unexpected event which has held us up for a few extra days, so we will be staying here in Bollon until Thursday now.  (That’s the plan at this moment.)

Bollon main street

Exercising

We're not sure which way we'll go, but we're heading in the direction of Millmerran for the Campoven Festival.  We may miss out on going via Nindigully.  Not a big deal – we’ve been there before – but its just been painted PINK for a funraising event last weekend and would have been fun to see it.  Nevermind…

Our beautiful Jeddy

What held us up is ROY!!!!

Being such the social fella that he is, he invited some of our neighbours around to watch the NRL grand final on Sunday night.

After a great night with plenty of laughter, and good cheer and of course too much beer and wine, the night ended in a fall for Roy, which resulted in a popped shoulder and much pain.

This happened at about 10:30pm.  Luckily a couple of our guests (Robyn and Kevin) are AMBOS.  So, out came their skills and they got the situation sorted with as little drama as possible.  The result was that an ambulance was called from St George (110km away) and when it arrived about 2 hours later, took the party boy away to hospital.  Kevin and Robyn said there's an AMBO term for this situation - PRI (Piss related injury).  (I think that is right).  Off to hospital he went.....

The next morning I received a phone call from him saying he'd been discharged and to come and get him.  Xrays had been taken in the morning – and the shoulder had gone back into place on its own.

Robyn, Kevin and Roy

The car wasn't unhitched – which meant the van had to be chocked and lifted.  I’ve never done this before, its always been Roy’s job (I do the inside and he does the outside).  I was very grateful for all the help that came my way.  Sam and Kevin, Robyn and Merna got it all under control for me and got me on my way.  Thanks guys for all your help. We really appreciate all you've done -  you're priceless...

I have made it my business to watch and learn what to do from now on, you never know when you will have to do it yourself!  I even emptied the disgusting loo for the first time... (Now I know how you felt Wayne), ha ha

Roy was told to take it easy for a few days – which means NOT to use his arm and to keep it in a sling…  So this is why we’ve decided to stay put until Thursday.

On this trip we have met some really wonderful people and sincerely hope we do keep in touch with them.

Robyn (the ambo) is multiskilled, it turns out she is also a great campoven cook.  She had a morning tea the other day, inviting a number of campers from nearby.  Very inspiring – I got a recipe from her for one of her dampers and intend giving it a go in the near future.  (yeah sure!!)

This morning Sam came over to show us how to filter muddy river water, for use in the kitchen or for washing.  You really do learn something new every day!!  Thanks Sam..

Robyn is cooking up chocolate slices in the campoven this arvo – YUM!!! Looking forward to it.

Afternoon Tea

Next Day

Well, we had afternoon tea and as you can see - there was none left.  The Choco Slices were delicious!!  Tomorrow its my turn and under Robyn's instruction, I am going to make a damper..

Tomorrow has been and gone and the damper turned out beautifully..... Look out Miss Elly!!!
